THURGOOD MARSHALL
The first Black Associate Justice signs a First Day Postal Card honoring John Witherspoon.
Postal Card signed: "Thurgood Marshall" as Associate Justice, 5½x3¼. Imprinted postal card in the Vignettes of Americana series, honoring John Witherspoon, 9-cent imprinted Witherspoon postage, postmarked Princeton, New Jersey, November 10, 1975, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Imprinted biography of Witherspoon on verso. Appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson on October 2, 1967, Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was the first Black American Associate Justice to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court (1967-1991). As Associate Justice, Marshall supported First Amendment rights, opposed the death penalty and argued against any form of discrimination. Previously, as legal director for the NAACP, he had argued the landmark Civil Rights case, Brown v. Board of Education (1954), before the Supreme Court. Marshall won the case, resulting in the outlawing of racial segregation in public schools. Light paper clip impression at upper left corner. Fine condition.
