Typescript signed: "Montgomery of Alamein/F.M./January 1, 1968", 1p, 8½x11. Headed: "Instrument of Surrender/of/All German Armed Forces in Holland, in/North-West Germany including all Islands/and in Denmark". In part: "1. The German Command agrees to the surrender of all German armed forces in Holland, in north-west Germany including the Freisian Islands and Heligoland and all other islands, in Schleswig-Holstein, and in Denmark, to the C.-in-C. 21st Army Group. This is to include all naval ships in these areas. These forces to lay down their arms and to surrender unconditionally. 2. All hostilities on land, on sea, or in the air by German forces in the above areas to cease at 0800 hours British Double Summer Time on Saturday 5 May 1945...." There are seven numbered paragraphs. The original of this German surrender was accepted by British Field Marshal Montgomery on May 4, 1945, at 1830 hrs (6:30 P.M.). The five Germans signing the surrender were Friedburg, Kinzel, Wagner, Pollek and Freidel. As Commander of the 8th Army in Egypt, Montgomery began the offensive at el-Alamein and drove Rommel's forces from Egypt, Libya and Tripolitania in November 1942. Following the Allied invasion of France, he was made Field Marshal. Montgomery commanded the British-Canadian 21st Army Group in northern France in 1944. Lightly creased at upper blank corners.
