JOHNNY DOLLAR
This later photograph of the rockabilly singer is signed to Charles Mank
Inscribed printed photograph signed in ink: "To My Good/Friend/Chaw/Mank/Always Yours/in Country music/Johnny Dollar" in black ink. 8x10. Johnny Dollar (1922-1986) was a country and rockabilly singer, mostly writing songs about his previous careers in truck driving and lumber work. His music career began in Dallas fronting a group called the Texas Sons and performed on the Louisiana Hayride in the middle of the 1950s. Dollar recorded a number of songs with Columbia records in the late 1960's. His biggest hit was "Big Rig Rollin' Man" (1968), also the title of his second album. Later he worked in record production for other country artists, including Jimmy Dickens and The New Coon Creek Girls. His ability to sing destroyed by throat cancer operations, he committed suicide in 1986 at the age of 64. This item comes from the estate of Charles "Chaw" Mank Jr. (1902-1985), noted songwriter, author, bandleader, record producer, sheet music publisher, psychic, radio personality, silent movie theater organist, world champion pen pal, inveterate collector and Hollywood/music fan club pioneer. Toned. Corners slightly rounded. Otherwise, fine condition.
