Check No. 60-04-23, drawn on the account of Sir Vivian and Lady Fuchs at the National Westminster Bank, payable to Nicola Kirkham for one penny. Geologist Fuchs (1908-1999) led a 12-person Trans-Antarctic Expedition on the first land crossing of Antarctica.Starting from the Weddell Sea, he reached Scott Station on March 2, 1958, after traveling 2,158 miles in 98 days. This land crossing proved conclusively that under the polar ice sheet there existed the single continent of Antarctica. Fuchs, who directed the British Antarctic survey from 1958 to 1973, was knighted in 1958. Fine condition.
