WILLIAM GLADSTONE. Autograph Letter signed: "W Gladstone", 3x4½. London, England, 1875 June 8. Addressed on verso (unknown hand) to Reverend P. SchafF, London. Post card imprinted with half penny British postage, postmarked on same date. In full: "Rev. & dear Sir perhaps will be able & will be so kind as to give me the pleasure of your company at breakfast on Thursday the 17th at ten? Faithfully yours." English statesman Gladstone (1809-1898) was first elected to the House of Commons in 1832, joining the Cabinet of Conservative Robert Peel in 1832. Breaking with the Conservatives over the issue of free trade, which Gladstone favored, he later led the Liberal Party, serving four terms as Prime Minister (1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886 and 1892-1894). He promoted extension of the vote to the working class, free trade and, late in his career, Irish home rule. He engaged in many oratorical duels with his archrival, Conservative leader Benjamin Disraeli. Despite his long service in the government, Gladstone's relations with Queen Victoria were strained. The addressee was Philip Schaff (1819-1893), a Swiss-born Biblical scholar and church historian who taught for many years in the United States and visited England in 1875. Clipped lower left corner. Lightly soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) in blank lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
