Rob McClanahan (b. 1958) is an American former professional hockey left winger best known as a member of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid. McClanahan played collegiate hockey at the University of Minnesota under coach Herb Brooks. During three seasons with the Golden Gophers from 1976 to 1979, he recorded 45 goals and 63 assists for 108 points in 121 games. He helped Minnesota win the 1979 NCAA championship before joining Brooks and the U.S. Olympic program. The Buffalo Sabres selected McClanahan in the third round, 49th overall, of the 1978 NHL Amateur Draft. Before beginning his NHL career, however, he became an important part of the 1980 U.S. Olympic team. McClanahan scored five goals in seven games at Lake Placid and played in the Americans' historic 4-3 victory over the Soviet Union. Two days later, he scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal against Finland as the United States came from behind to win 4-2 and secure the gold medal. McClanahan joined Buffalo immediately after the Olympics and appeared in 13 regular-season games and 10 playoff games in 1979-80. His professional career later included time with the Hartford Whalers and New York Rangers, where he was reunited with Brooks. He also represented the United States at the 1981 Canada Cup. In 224 NHL regular-season games, McClanahan recorded 38 goals and 63 assists for 101 points. Fine condition.
