THE PAJAMA GAME MOVIE CAST: DORIS DAY and JOHN RAITT
Doris Day and John Raitt sign a still from the 1957 musical
comedy
Inscribed Printed Photograph Signed in Ink:
"To/George/fondly/Doris/Day" and "To George/Best Always/John
Raitt". B/w, 10x8. Publicity still from the 1957 musical comedy, The
Pajama Game, which starred Doris Day in her Academy Award nominated role as
Katie (Babe) Williams and John Raitt as Sid Sorokin. Carol Haney is also
pictured. Captioned at lower margin. Bob Fosse choreographed the dance
numbers in the motion picture version of the hit Broadway musical. The film was
so successful at the box office that Warner Bros. immediately began work on the
film version of another musical, Damn Yankees. Known for her wholesome,
"girl-next-door" good looks and sparkling personality, DORIS DAY, who became
known as "America's Sweetheart", was one of the most popular and highest paid
actresses by the early 1950s, brightening up the silver screen opposite such
romantic leading men as Rock Hudson and Cary Grant as well as John Raitt. After
her would-be dancing career was sidelined by an accident, Day had turned to
singing, first touring with bands and then introducing hit after hit in a
string of romantic comedies. Day's singing career was just as hot as her
acting career, and her hit from the movie The Man Who Knew Too Much,
"Que Sera, Sera", won an Oscar. In 1987, she established the Doris Day
Animal League, America's premier lobbying organization dedicated to focusing
attention on legislative issues involving the humane treatment of animals. Stage
and screen actor JOHN RAITT (1917-2005), who had been trained as an opera
singer, had first appeared in The Pajama Game on stage opposite Janis
Paige in 1954, introducing the Top 40 hit, "Hey There". After making the
film version in 1957, Raitt decided to return to the stage, where he had
originated the role of Billy Bigelow in Carousel (1945-1947). Raitt,
who has also made guest appearances on a number of TV shows, is the father of
singer Bonnie Raitt (born in 1949). Lightly creased and soiled at blank
margins. Otherwise, fine condition.
