Photograph signed: "William L. Shirer", "Conrad Richter"
and "Randall Jarrell". B/w, 10x8, by World Wide Photos. WILLIAM
SHIRER (1904-1993) is holding The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich,
which won the National Book Award in the non-fiction category in 1961. Shirer, a
veteran foreign correspondent who had been stationed in Berlin until 1940, is
also the model for the correspondent Walker in the film Gandhi. CONRAD
RICHTER (1890-1968), who is holding his novel, The Waters of Kronos,
which garnered the same prize in the fiction category, had previously won the
Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for The Town (1951), the third volume of a
trilogy recounting life on the American frontier. RANDALL JARRELL
(1914-1965) is holding The Woman at the Washington Zoo, which won in
the poetry category. Jarrell, whose early poems drew on his experience in World
War II, was also a noted critic. Jarrell died young, struck by a car, an event
which many but not all of those close to him considered a suicide. Creased,
touching Richter's signature. Some surface wear.
