Commemorative Envelope signed: "Chas. Gehringer". The envelope honors the "Battle of Shiloh", a Union Army victory during the American Civil War. Five U.S. stamps honoring prominent American writers affixed, postmarked Pittsburgh Landing, Tenn, September 16, 1960.MLB Hall of Famer Charles Gehringer (1903-1993) was the American League MVP in 1937. He had 200 or more hits seven times, hit at least .300 fourteen times and had at least 100 RBI seven times. Gehringer hit .320 lifetime and .321 in twenty World Series games. One of baseball's most sure-handed second basemen and a dependable hitter, the taciturn and undemonstrative Gehringer was called "The Mechanical Man". He spent his entire 19-season career with the Detroit Tigers (1924-1942) and earned six straight All-Star selections from 1933 to 1938. Eight years after his retirement, the Detroit Tigers hired Gehringer to be the team's general manager. He remained with the organization in various positions throughout the 1950s. Signed across postmark and commemorative stamp but fully legible. Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
