ERIC LINDEN
Quote from Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem My Spirit, Sore from Marching, written by actor Eric Linden and signed with his "best"
Autograph quotation signed "best,/Eric Linden" in pencil. Black ink notations at bottom edge in unknown hand. 5¾x4¼, three binder holes along left edge, rounded right corners. Quotation in full: "'-from cool and aimless beauty Your Bread and comfort take". This quotation is from Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem My Spirit, Sore from Marching. Perennially fresh-faced Linden (1909-1994) was a B-movie first and second lead of the 1930s, often appearing a wise-alecky punk or weak-willed mama's boy. He appeared in a few plays before cast for the lead in RKO's juvenile Are These Our Children? (1931). A favorite of critics even in the most dreadful of pictures, Linden appeared in over 30 movies between 1931 and 1943. His career was hurt by his youthful looks, but what killed it was his appearance as an "amputation case" in Gone With the Wind(1939). Most of his performance was left on the cutting room floor, which made it look like Linden had stooped to accepting a bit part. That all but ended his movie days; he appeared in one more film (1941's Criminals Within) before retiring from them for good. Linden also appeared in two Broadway plays: Faust (1928) and Ladies' Money (1934). He worked as an inspector and radio dispatcher for the highway department in Orange County, California after retiring from films. Lightly toned, creased and bowed. Folded in half and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
