Undated album leaf signatures of four members of the Department in the late
19th century
Signatures: ""Very truly your friend/H. C. Lovell", "F. D. Sewall",
"Webster Elmes/Chief Clerk Office of/the Solicitor of the Treasury", "T. J.
Smith/Solicitor Int. Revenue", 6¾x6 album leaf. F. D. SEWALL
commanded the 19th Maine Volunteers during the Civil War. This regiment,
composed mainly of recruits from Bath, Maine, Sewall's home town, fought with
distinction at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, and the siege of
Richmond. Sewall, an Internal Revenue agent when he signed this sheet, was
Commissioner of Internal Revenue in the Harrison and McKinley administrations.
No information is available concerning H. C. Lovell or T. J. Smith. WEBSTER
ELMES, who has identified his office here, also wrote at least two
comprehensive tomes: The Executive Departments of the United States at
Washington (1879) and A Treatise on the Law of the Customs (1897).
Top edged trimmed unevenly. Left edge chipped from previous binding. Lightly
toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
