GUTZON BORGLUM
Gutson Borglum signed and dated this pamphlet, from a 1914 exhibition of his sculptures, in 1917. This pamphlet was signed 10 years before Borglum began designing the Mount Rushmore National Monument and is a fantastic overview of his early work!
Inscribed pamphlet signed "To Stanley Horka./Sincerely Yours/Gutzon Borglum/1917" on page 35 beneath a photograph of his sculpture Sheridan Equestrian. B/w, 46 pages, 4¼x8¼, mostly single-sided pages. Bound with beige string. Titled: "Exhibition of Sculpture/By/Gutzon Borglum/Avery Library/Columbia University/February Twenty-Eight/Nineteen Fourteen". Sheridan Equestrian, a bronze completed in 1908, is located on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, D.C. An identical statue of Sheridan astride his horse, Winchester, cast from the same mold, was placed in Chicago in 1923. This pamphlet, depicting his works, was signed ten years before Borglum (1867-1941, born John Gutzon de la Mothe Borglum in St. Charles, Idaho) began the design and carving of the heads of Presidents Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt on Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills of South Dakota. His other works include the large head of Lincoln in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., figures of the apostles at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City and the design and initial carving of the Confederate memorial on the face of Stone Mountain, Georgia. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Signature is lightly smeared in places, but legible. Ink transference on page facing signature. Small crushed insect on page 9. Covers are lightly nicked at edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
