Printed card signed in ink: "Henry P. Baldwin/ Detroit/ Michigan" in black ink. Detroit, Michigan. March 27, 1869. Henry P. Baldwin (1814-1892) was an American politician, best known for his tenure as the 15th Governor of Michigan (1869-1873) and as a United States Senator for Michigan (1879-1881). Baldwin moved to Michigan from Rhode Island in 1838, establishing a wholesale business in boots and shoes; he later served as a member of the convention which organized the U.S. Republican Party in Jackson, Michigan. After being elected to the Michigan State Senate (1861-1862), he was named the director of the Michigan State Bank and President of the Second National Bank of Detroit. He was elected Governor in 1868, most notably vetoing the women's suffrage amendment which was passed by the state legislature in 1870. Baldwin appointed to fill a vacant seat in the U.S. Senate in 1878, as well as simultaneously chairing the Michigan Republican Party (1880-1882). Side edges irregularly cut. Corners rounded. Toned. Light surface creases. Slight stains on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
