Glued to a 7x9½ sheet that has been affixed to a 9½x11½ page. Captioned: "The Notman Photographic Co. Limited/3 Park Street-2184 Boylston Street, Boston." Signed on image. After a visit to Germany in 1831, 23-year-old theological student Samuel Francis Smith (1808-1895), impressed that German children started their school day by singing a hymn, wrote a patriotic hymn using a simple German melody. Coincidentally, the melody was the same as that of the British national anthem, "God Save the King". Smith jotted down the complete hymn on a piece of scrap paper within half an hour, and the result, "America", was first sung at a children's celebration in Boston's Park Street Church on July 4, 1832. George Gershwin used Smith's phrase "Of Thee I Sing" as the title of his 1932 Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. quoted the entire first stanza as he concluded his "I have a dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial in 1963. Signed cabinet photographs of Smith are extremely desirable and rarely appear on the market.

BRIGHAM YOUNG (1801-1877) was the second President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at the time he signed this legal tender, which kept Mormon money internal in order to fuel Young's powerful financial cooperative. Young, known for leading the Saints to the Great Salt Lake Valley (1846-1847), became the Mormon Church's second President in 1847. Once in Utah, he established aggressive immigration and colonization programs that gathered European converts and established Mormon programs throughout the western United States. HEBER C. KIMBALL (1801-1868) had been an original member of the Council of Twelve under the church's first President, Joseph Smith, Jr. (1805-1844). He continued to serve in that capacity under Young from 1847 until his death in 1868. NEWELL K.

Signed, typed letter in German (1901) TLS: "Herzl" as Chairman, 1 page, 8x8. Vienna, 1901 February 21. Countersigned by the Secretary. In German, not translated. To Mr. Gesinnungsgenosse regarding financial matters discussed at a Zionist meeting held in London. In 1896, Theodor Herzl wrote Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State) advocating the founding of a Jewish State in Palestine. He organized the Zionist World Congress in Basel, Switzerland in 1897 and was President of the Zionist Organization from 1897 to his death in 1904. In Europe, Herzl kept in contact with many leaders. In 1901, England offered the Jewish people land in British East Africa. This divided many Zionists who wanted a home in Palestine. Extreme worry over the dispute injured Herzl's health and hastened his death in 1904 at the age of 44. Slight nick at left edge. Folds do not touch signature. Overall, fine condition.
