HESTER SAINSBURY
Handwritten note of the English dancer and artist
Autograph Note signed: "Hester", 1 page, 3½x6½. On illustrated note paper, in full: "At last this has been reprinted. And perhaps H. W. is an old friend of yours - but anyway, if you and the children don't know him I should love to introduce you. He speaks such perfect English! With affectionate greeting to you all". Pencil note (unknown hand) at upper margin: "Hester Sainsbury artist friend and illustrator H. W. books". Hester Margaret Sainsbury (1890-1967) was an English modern dancer, often composing poems to accompany her dances. She was inspired to take up etching in an effort to capture the lines and rhythm of dance in graphic form. In the 1920s, her etchings in wood and copper illustrated many art books, including Edward Powys Mathers' Eastern Love (1928) and Paul Morand's Earth Girdled (1929). Many of these books were published by Haslewood Press, presumably the H. W. Sainsbury desires to introduce to the addressee here. Haslewood Press was co-owned by artist Frederick Etchells, whom Sainsbury would marry in 1932. Edges toned and worn. Corners worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
