JAMES FARGO. Stock Certificate signed: "Jas. C. Fargo" on verso as assignor of shares New York, 1891 April 30; also signed by "W. S. Webb" as President and by "James D. Taylor" as Secretary, 1p, 12x8. New York, 1891 April 20. No. 1533 certifying Fargo is entitled to 41 shares in the Wagner Palace Car Company. Three vignettes: one of a train about to pick up passengers, flanked by two of commercial buildings. The Wagner Palace Car Company was controlled by the New York Central RR and in competition with the Pullman Company for sleeping car patrons. It was formed in 1869 as part of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt's railroad empire. It engaged in several court battles with the Pullman Company, which finally purchased it (1889) after Vanderbilt's death. James C. FARGO (1829-1915) was the younger brother of William G. Fargo, co-founder in 1850 of the American Express Company. A longtime employee of that company and manager of its New York operations, James succeeded to the presidency of American Express upon his brother's death in 1881. W. S. WEBB, President of Wagner, was married to a daughter of William H. Vanderbilt, the son of Cornelius. Cancellation stamps touch signatures of Webb and Taylor. Cancellation holes touch Webb's middle initial and flourish of "o" in "Fargo". Horizontal fold passes through all of Fargo's signature. All signatures are legible.
