MARY SURRATT'S HAIR Historic Hair Strands from Mary Surratt, The Lincoln Assassination Conspirator. Illustrations on front and verso of the card include: an "Image of Mary Surratt taken from a contemporary CDV owned by Samuel Curtis"; a copy of an entry from the original diary kept by Samuel Curtis, referencing the hair (the entry originally accompanied the hair but cannot be read from this page); and a reproduction of the envelope that contained the hair, bearing the writing of Curtis. Surratt's execution on July 7, 1865 is also depicted in two reproduced photographs, taken both before and after the hanging. There are also reproductions from other Curtis entries: April 9, 1865, mentioning Lee's surrender; April 15, referring to Lincoln being shot; and April 20, "the boys went to the city of Washington to see the remains of our late President Lincoln." All of the above are reproduced on the front and verso of the page showing the hair. Curtis was a member of the 8th Regiment that was present at the execution of four conspirators in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at the Old Penitentiary in Washington, D.C. Mrs. Mary Surratt, who kept the boarding house where John Wilkes Booth devised his assassination plot, was among those hanged. She is reported to have been the first to die.

She has penned (but not signed) this very moving reminiscence of "happy summer evenings at the Cape … eating Mathilda's fish chowder" with JFK and his father, when "touched by destiny" was thought to mean "only happy things." Autograph Manuscript unsigned but with "Kennedy" twice in text, 1 page, 8x12½. No place, no date but written in the 1960s. In full: "4. Now Mr Kennedy is sick and Jack is gone. Mr Kennedy had seen Jack nearly die so many times. He used to say that Jack was touched by destiny. But those were happy summer evenings at the Cape when he came there, when we were all eating Mathilda's fish chowder - and you thought that meant only happy things - to be touched by destiny. Dear Grandpa - you brought all the joy to my life - more than one should dare to hope to have - and because of that - all the pain. I will remember you - and I will love you until I die." Born Jacqueline Bouvier in 1929, Jackie married John F. Kennedy in 1953. The third-youngest first lady, she left behind no policy initiatives but set a high standard for style and grace in her person and in the White House, and with her tragic dignity after her husband's assassination.

In a handwritten letter to a friend in Paris, Cassatt explains that her art keeps her too busy to reply to most letters, but that she would welcome a visit in the Spring. ALS: "Mary Cassatt", 6 pages, 5¼x7, front and verso. Mesnil-Beaufresne, Mesnil-Theribus (Oise), France, no date. On imprinted stationery to Miss Mary Gardner Swift. Begins: "My Dear Mary". In full: "Of course I had your letter but I never thought of answering it. If you knew what my life was you would [five words illegible] than in the [illegible] If you would love to write to me anything that you think I would I shall always be glad to know [two words illegible] I am a very busy woman. Most of my correspondence is done in French through my [illegible] Is French, she has been with us 43 years Ever since my Mothers (sic) death thirty years ago I have been alone, carrying on this place & working here. Ah my art. Of course I have been better known as an artist in France [illegible] is a member of the family In the meantime I send you my kindest regards & hope that next Spring if I am well enough you will come out and see me I had my three nephews and one niece here this last summer. Ellen Mary has a daughter born Sept 9th.…"

Twenty weeks before her ill-fated challenger flight, the New Hampshire school teacher writes, "I'm excited about my upcoming shuttle flight." A rare and emotional piece of American space flight history. Typed Letter Signed "S. Christa McAuliffe," one page, 8.5 x 11, NASA letterhead, September 18, 1985. A response to a note from an admirer. In full: "Thank you for your note. I do not have my official photograph yet, but I have placed your name on a list and you should receive one this fall. I'm excited about my upcoming shuttle flight and appreciate your interest." Sharon Christa McAuliffe (1948-1986) taught junior high school in Maryland (1970-1978) and Concord, New Hampshire (1978-1979) and high school in Concord (1980-1985) before being selected as the primary candidate for the NASA Teacher in Space Project on July 19, 1985. She was a payload specialist on Challenger STS-51L which was launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, at 11:38 AM on January 28, 1986. McAuliffe and her six colleagues were killed when Challenger exploded 73 seconds after launch. Light toning in lower right corner. Otherwise, fine condition.

In full: "This will serve as our Agreement for the Palo Alto Book Service for the purpose of promoting and selling the remaining inventory of The Ayn Rand Letter, The Objectivist, the bound copies of The Objectivist Newsletter, and the pamphlets published by The Objectivist Newsletter and The Objectivist. We will receive the physical inventory of the above as well as any remaining stock of your novels and non-fiction works, including Introduction to Objectivist Epistemology, all of which are held by The Objectivist Book Service, Inc. The inventory will be shipped to us, insured, via book rate, or by truck, if that method should prove less expensive. We will share the cost of shipment with the Objectivist Book Service, Inc. The physical inventory shall, at all times, remain your property. We agree to insure the inventory for its replacement value, and shall share equally with you the cost of insurance. Cabinet card of the author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, the anti-slavery novel that contributed to the start of the Civil War Photograph signed "Harriet Beecher Stowe". B/w sepia tone, 3¾x5¼ cabinet card-style photograph mounted on 4¼x6½ card. Encouraged by her brother, temperance and anti-slavery Pastor Henry Ward Beecher, and her husband Calvin Elias Stowe, Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, or Life Among the Lowly. She wrote a number of other novels during her career, but she's known primarily for this book, her first. Uncle Tom's Cabin was drawn from her personal experience. Kentucky, the state across the Ohio River from her home in Cincinnati, was a slave state, and her research included interviews with fugitive slaves and slave owners. First published as a serial in an anti-slavery newspaper, the "National Era", in 1851-1852, Uncle Tom's Cabin reached millions, first as a novel and then as a play. It was first performed on stage in Troy, New York on September 27, 1852, where it ran for 100 nights. Uncle Tom's Cabin angered Southerners and was important in solidifying sentiment in the North against slavery.

To "Dear Mr. Flood", in full: "I did not mean to be slow to respond to your nice letter. I wanted to wait and see if I could be in Los Angeles in the next ten days but it seems now like I will not be able to get away until about the fifth, or six of Oct. and I know you cannot wait until then. I thank you very much for offering to wait a few days until I could get there. I will see you when I come to Vidal. I have many things that I must attend to before I go to the desert. I hope you are right to the gross or net but different attorneys have told me that you are wrong - we will have to wait and see. That is all that can be done. I am glad you have had a nice vacation and also to know Jarvis is going to make a sale. And I hope you will too. I am feeling much better but I still have a cold. My folks are living on Alexandria Street, but I don't know the number. I think I have the name spelled wrong. There may be such a thing as my leaving here by next Tuesday - but I am not sure.…"
