JOHN W. JENRETTE JR. - TYPED LETTER SIGNED 04/17/1980 - HFSID 34536
Price: $140.00
JOHN JENRETTE
Already nabbed in the ABSCAM scandal, he signs a typed letter, attempting to
raise money for his 1980 re-election campaign
Typed Letter signed: "John" as Congressman, 1 page, 7x9. On
his personal House stationery. Washington, D.C., 1980 April 17. To Dr.
William N. Walton, Charleston, SC. Addressing him as "Billy", he writes, in
part: "I value your friendship and your offer of help--particularly in
these trying times. Because of recent events that have prohibited me from being
as politically active as I have in the past, I use this letter to call on you
for help. My June 10 primary is just around the corner. Poll results show me in
good shape, but as you know it takes more than good poll results to win an
election. It takes money and it takes your help now. Campaign professionals tell
me that I need $50,000 by the first week of May for the primary. I would greatly
appreciate it if you would raise $1,000 for the Jenrette '80 Volunteer Committee
by May 1. I will appreciate anything you can do for me and I hope you understand
my special need for help at this time. With deep appreciation for your offer of
friendship and support. P.S. For your information there are some facts enclosed
which might help you with your fundraising efforts" The FBI
set up Abdul Enterprises, Ltd. in 1978 and FBI employees posed as Middle Eastern
businessmen in videotaped talks with over 30 government officials, where they
offered money in return for political favors to a non-existent sheik. In
February, Jenrette and seven other members of Congress were
said to be under investigation as a result of the operation named ABSCAM. On
June 13, 1980, Jenrette was indicted. On December 10, 1980, having lost his bid
for re-election, Jenrette resigned from Congress as the House Ethics Committee
moved toward his expulsion. In 1981, he was convicted of
bribery and conspiracy. Jenrette's "Playboy" centerfold
wife, Rita, later revealed the fact that she had engaged in sexual relations
with the Congressman on the steps of the Capitol building. (The satirical
singer songwriters, the Capitol Steps, took their name from this incident.)Jenrette, who had bragged to FBI agents on tape that he had "larceny in his
heart," served additional time in 1990 after shoplifting a necktie. Lightly
creased at upper edge. Nailhead-size stain in lower blank area. Fine
condition.
