KEITH WAITE
Award-winning cartoonist sends his thanks to a fan, signs his name in blue ink
Autograph note signed: "Keith Waite" in blue ink. 1 page, 6x2¼. Original note cut into pieces and affixed to white piece of paper. May 6, 1973. London, England. In full: "Dear Mr. Croxford,/ Am privileged/ to sign my name for/ such a distinguished/ collector". Cartoonist Keith Waite (b. 1927), a New Zealand native, made his name there drawing for the Taranaki and Auckland News and the later for the Otago Daily Times from 1949 to 1951, after which he made the move to London where he worked steadily there before another move to Glasgow. In both jobs, Waite was very unsuccessful in creating interest of a following of his cartoons so he left and worked as a freelance for Punch and Men Only; however, he found out he did not really enjoy working for a magazine and in 1956 got a job as the Editorial and Political Cartoonist on the Daily Sketch and designed columns such as "Waite's Comment"and "Start the Day Bright with Waite". Finally finding his niche, Waite was voted the CCGB Cartoonist of the Year in 1963, he was joined the newly created The Sun newspaper, and in 1966 was one of the founding members of the British Cartoonist Asssociaton, and acted as its first Treasurer. After being transferred to the Daily Mirror in 1969, were he worked for over 10 years; after a break he became the business-page cartoonist for The Times in 1987 until his retirement in 1997. Toned. Very irregularly cut. Ink notes in right margin in unknown hand. Lightly stained. Light surface creased. Corners and edges worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
