Oliver O. Howard sends typed letter saying that he will loan his tent.
Typed Letter Signed: "O. O. Howard" and "O. O. H." in postscript,1p, 8¼x11 letterhead for Lincoln Memorial University. Burlington, Vermont, 1904 June 27. To Mrs. J. B. Pond, Jersey City, New Jersey. In full: "Your kind letter came duly to hand. I find I can purchase a new tent for $23. If you say so I will do that and lend it to you for the summer or longer if you wish it. I did not know that you and your sister were in the same business and I shall be very glad to call upon you at the Everett House sometime when I am in New York. I have the pleasantest of memories connected with you, your son who is now so large a boy, your sister and your good husband. These memories are treasures which I never surrender. Very sincerely yours," Handwritten postscript in full: "P.S. This will include a test & flag such as you wish. If you decide to take it [illegible] write mw where to send it." Oliver O. Howard, the commander of the Army of the Tennessee in Sherman's march to the sea, lost his right arm at Fair Oaks and fought at Gettysburg. After the war, he directed the Freedman's Bureau, where he strongly advocated land and votes for former slaves.In 1867, he founded and served as first President of Howard University (1869-1874). He negotiated a peace agreement with Cochise's Chiricahua Apaches (1872) for President Grant. From 1881-1882, Brigadier General Howard was Superintendent at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Folds through "w" of Howard and first "O" of postscript. Lightly shaded and creased. Ink transfer not affecting signature. 1-¼ inch tear at upper left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
