MARY ROBERTS RINEHART
Signed autograph sentiment on a card printed with her married name, affixed to a page with her newspaper photo and obituary
Calling Card signed: "Very Cordially,/Mary Roberts Rinehart", 3¼x2½ card. Signed in ink above her printed, married name: Mrs. Stanley Marshall Rinehart, affixed to an 8½x11 sheet bearing a newspaper obituary (4 surfaces). Trained as a nurse, Mary Roberts Rinehart (1876-1958) took up writing in 1903. Beginning in 1908, with The Circular Staircase, she created a series of well-crafted murder mysteries that rivaled those of her English contemporary, Agatha Christie. One of her mysteries included the line, "The butler did it." She was also a playwright; three of her plays ran on Broadway at the same time. From the personal collection of Ralph Errington Ward (1926-2009). Ward, a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the China-Burma-India Theater of World War II, went on to become President and CEO of Cheseborough-Ponds, Inc., transforming the cosmetics firm into a major home product conglomerate. Adhesive on verso (affixing card to the page). Lightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
