RAOUL WALSH
Raoul Walsh signs Directors Guild of America annual declaration
Document signed: "Raoul Walsh", 1p, 8½x11. Santa Susana, California, 1970 December 23. Walsh reports his 1970 earnings as a director to the Directors Guild of America as none, as he is retired. After acting in several silent films, including the role of John Wilkes Booth in D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation (1915), Raoul Walsh (1887-1980) went on to become a successful screenwriter and one of Hollywood's greatest directors. Walsh was known for his action films, but knew how to put psychological subtleties and innovative narrative structures into his films. Just a few of his well-loved films were The Thief of Baghdad, What Price Glory, The Roaring Twenties, The Dark Command, They Drive by Night, They Died with Their Boots On and High Sierra. He directed Fairbanks Sr., Cagney, Flynn and Bogart, among others, in some of their best films. His earnings reported here must have been residuals. The last film Walsh directed was A Distant Trumpet (1964). Slightly creased. Ink stamps at left center portion. Otherwise, fine condition.
