A founding member of the Western music group, Sons of the Pioneers (1934), ROY ROGERS (1911-1998), broke into films as a singing cowboy the following year. Beginning in 1938, he had starring roles in dozens of Western films featuring his horse, Trigger, and his frequent sidekick, Gabby Hayes. Another frequent co-star was DALE EVANS (1912-2001), who started her career as a singer on radio and in nightclubs. Roy and Dale co-starred in several films, including The Cowboy and theSenorita(1944), The Yellow Rose of Texas(1944), Don'tFence Me In (1945), My Pal Trigger (1946) and Apache Rose (1947), before they were married in 1947. They then starred on television on The Roy Rogers Show(1951-1957) and The RoyRogers and Dale Evans Show(1962-1963), which closed with their theme song, "Happy Trails to You", written by Evans. Married for 50 years, "The King of the Cowboys" and "The Queen of the West" were a devoted couple with many children (many of whom were adopted) and grandchildren. Evans, who also authored several inspirational books, later hosted a religious program. Singing cowboy REX ALLEN (1920-1999) appeared on stage, rodeo and radio (National Barn Dance) before beginning his film career with Republic Pictures as a possible replacement for singing cowboy star Roy Rogers. In a span of five years (1949-1954), Allen made more than 20 Westerns, many featuring his horse, Ko Ko, and sidekick, Slim Pickens. The star of his own TV series, Frontier Doctor (1958), Allen was also the narrator of many Disney films, including The Legend of Lobo (1962), The Incredible Journey (1963), Charlie, The Lonesome Cougar (1967) and Charlotte's Web (1973). His son, Rex Allen, Jr., became a popular country music star. One of Republic Pictures' singing cowboys, MONTE HALE (1919-2009) had supporting roles in Westerns starring Roy Rogers and Sunset Carson before starring in his own series of films in the late 1940s. Later he toured with the band of singing cowboy composer Ray Whitley. Hale has been inducted into the Western Music Association Hall of Fame. CLAYTON MOORE (1914-1999) entered show business as a young circus acrobat. He worked his way up the ladder in Hollywood Westerns from extra to stunt man to supporting actor, reaching stardom on television as The Lone Ranger from 1949-1952 and 1954-1957. Thereafter, he made a good living from commercials and public appearances as The Lone Ranger. After a film career beginning in 1938, JOHN HART (1917-2009) played the title role in TV's The Lone Ranger in 52 of its early episodes (1950-1953). In later decades, he guest starred frequently on TV, including appearances in six episodes of Dallas (1979-1981). Hart reprised his Lone Ranger character on episodes of The Greatest American Hero (1981) and Happy Days (1982). Actress and dancer GRACE BRADLEY BOYD (born in 1913) was already established in Broadway and movie musicals (Anything Goes, 1936) and in other prominent film roles when she married actor William Boyd in 1937. Boyd had made the first of his 66 Hopalong Cassidy movies in 1935. Popular in theatres, the films became an even bigger hit when edited for 1950s television. Although Grace Bradley Boyd appeared in many promotions as Hoppy's wife, she never co-starred in a Hopalong Cassidy film. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on).
