SIR CHARLES G.D. ROBERTS
The Canadian author signs this handwritten poem dated July 1928
Autograph poem signed: "Charles G.D. Roberts" in black ink. 5x4. July 25, 1928, The Ernescliff, Toronto. In full: "In solitudes of peak & plain,/When vaulted space my sense unbars,/I pitch my tent, and camp the night/Beyond the unfathomed gulfs of stars." Sir Charles G.D. Roberts (1860-1943) was a Canadian poet and author, often named "the Father of Canadian Poetry". Homeschooled by his father, Roberts showed a vast intelligence as a young boy, publishing three articles in The Colonial Farmer at the age of 12. He pursued his schooling as he grew older, attending the University of New Brunswick for a B.A. and a M.A. and growing a lover for classic literature. He then began writing poetry, first publishing poems in local papers, and releasing his first book of poetry in 1880 titled Orion and Other Poems. His poems were well regarded and the book was a huge success, and he later went on to write several more successful books, including In Divers Tones, Songs of the Common Day, and The Book of the Native. For his work in Canadian literature, several honors and rewards have been given to Roberts, including being elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 1893, honorary LLD from UNB in 1906, Royal Society of Canada's first Lorne Pierce Medal, and honorary doctorate from Mount Allison University in 1942. There is also a statue of the author erected on the campus of his alma mater, the University of New Brunswick. Toned. Lightly creased. Horizontal fold on bottom margin. Photograph of the poet affixed to top of page. Typed notes on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
