WALTER L. FISHER
As Secretary of the Interior, he sends his autograph to a professor at Mount Union College.
Autograph Letter signed: "Walter L. Fisher" as Secretary of the Interior, 1 page, 5½x9. Washington, D.C., 1912 July 22. On official letterhead to Dr. Charles E. Rice, Mount Union College, Alliance, Ohio. In full: "In compliance with your request I am glad to give you this note for your collection. Sincerely yours". Walter L. Fisher (1862-1935), a liberal Republican, became president of the Municipal Voters League of Chicago (1906). The group's campaign against corruption was effective enough that candidates scrambled to sign the League's pledge of commitment to honest government. Fisher was also a founder of the National Conservation Association, an involvement which prompted President Taft to appoint him Secretary of the Interior (1911-1913). Fisher helped organize Taft's unsuccessful re-election campaign of 1912. Fisher's background might have made him a likely defector to former President Theodore Roosevelt's insurgent campaign against Taft's re-nomination and election, but Fisher, a personal friend of Taft, stayed loyal to the President. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly creased. Mounting residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
