WILL CARLETON
Signature of the 19th century American poet
Signature: "Will Carleton", 4x2½ slip. Will Carleton (1845-1912)
was an American poet whose principal theme was the life of ordinary
Americans. His first drew national acclaim with "Over the Hill to the
Poor House" (1872), which described the plight of many elderly Americans. In
1919, the Michigan legislature passed a law requiring the state's public
school teachers to include at least one of his poems in their teaching, and
designating October 12 as Will Carleton Day. Slightly soiled. Mounting
adhesive on verso shows through lightly. Otherwise, fine
condition.
