ZACK WHEAT
Check made out for $5.00 in cash in 1960
Check signed: "Zack D. Wheat", 6x2¾. Camdenton, Missouri, 1960 March 18. Un-numbered check, drawn on the Camden County Bank, payable to "Cash" for $5.00. Entirely filled out by Wheat. Zachariah D. "Zack" Wheat (1888-1972), a fine defensive left fielder, was one of the best hitters of the Dead Ball era. He played for the Brooklyn Superbas, re-named the Robins and then the Dodgers, in all but the final season of his Major League career (1909-1927), appearing in Brooklyn's first two World Series (1916 and 1920). Wheat, a skillful salary negotiator whose threatened holdouts invariably succeeded in boosting his pay, boasted a career .317 batting average with 132 homers (a modest total now, but impressive before the arrival of the lively ball). Disappointed that he never got the chance to manage a team, Wheat spent the rest of his life in varied pursuits: farmer, police officer, bowling alley manager, and finally the owner of a hunting and fishing resort in the Ozarks. He entered baseball's Hall of Fame in 1959. Lightly creased. Bank processing stamp on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
