ZEPPO MARX
Check filled out and signed: "Zeppo Marx", 6x2¾. Cathedral City, California, 1974 January 20. Check No. 147, drawn on the account of Zeppo Marx/Tamarisk Country Club at Security Pacific National Bank, payable to Ruth West, R.N., for $183.75. Memo "nursing care 5 days". Herbert "Zeppo" Marx (1901-1979), the youngest of the Marx Brothers, joined the act after brother Gummo's departure. Zeppo, who played the straight man to his brothers, starred in romantic roles with Groucho, Chico and Harpo on Broadway and in their first five films: The Cocoanuts, Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers and Duck Soup. He left the act in 1933 to pursue other business interests, including running a talent agency. Somewhat of a mechanical whiz, Zeppo invented a wristwatch that would monitor the pulse rate of cardiac patients, and his company, Marman Products, produced clamping devices that were used in the first atomic bomb raids over Japan in 1945. Tamarisk Country Club in Palm Springs was founded by the Marx Brothers, Jack Benny and other Jewish comedians in 1952 after they were discriminated by other golf clubs. Zeppo Marx lived there in retirement. Bank stamps on verso (faint show-through) and cancellation holes, not at signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
