Autograph Quotation signed: "On n'aime pas une femme pour qu'elle/dit; on aime ce qu'elle dit parce qu'on l'aime/Andre Maurois", 1 page, 5½x3½ card. Translation: "One doesn't love a woman for what she says; one loves what she says because one loves her." Andre Maurois (1885-1967) was originally the pen name of Emile Herzog, but he legally changed his name in 1947. Maurois wrote in many genres: novels, short stories, histories, biographies, children's books and an autobiography. His first novel, the humorous The Silence of Colonel Bramble, was based on his experience as an interpreter for British forces in France during World War I. He retained a lifelong interest in England, writing biographies of Disraeli, Byron and Shelley. Maurois entered the prestigious French Academy in 1938 on the recommendation of Marshall Philippe Petain, and dedicated a book to Petain. But while Petain became the head of the collaborationist Vichy government after the fall of France in 1940, Maurois joined DeGaulle's Free French forces. Maurois was the source of many quotable quotes. Whether the maxim he penned here was original, is a question requiring further research. Heavy mounting residue on verso. Creased and lightly toned.
