Autograph Quotation signed: “Who dares say this is much, or that is naught?/ The greatest good with gold is never bought;/ Weak hand the altar's choicest gifts have brought./ Carlotta Perry/ Milwaukee. Wis./April 7. 86”. The quotation Perry has included is from her poem “The Immortal Song”. Carlotta Perry (1840-1914) was a writer and poet who rose to prominence during the later part of the 19th century. Many of the poems, short stories, and children's stories Perry wrote were featured in the most popular periodicals and magazines of her time including Lippincott's Monthly Magazine, Godey's Lady's Book, and Harper's Magazine. In addition to writing poetry, Perry was a journalist; she worked for the Watertown Democrat in Wisconsin. Then, after moving to Milwaukee, she was employed by the Milwaukee Sentinel. Moreover, Perry was affiliated with the Starret School for Girls in Chicago. Darkened edges, especially at upper right-hand corner. Toned. Staining on verso. Scuffed at “who” on front. Otherwise, fine condition.
