CHARLES STROUSE
Letter from the Tony winning composer, speaking of the prospect of world peace: "We must stop believing we are good, that we march only to a noble music"
Autograph letter signed: "Charles Strouse", in black ink, 8½x11. New York City, New York. In part: "Dear Mr. Fox, Thank you for your letter. Actually, your question was once asked of Sigmund Freud by Albert Einstein - the great mathematician + pacifist. What I remember of Freuds answer serves me too. Something to the effect of: we must stop believing we are good, that we march only to a noble music; that we are not greedy, covetous, lustful, aggressive, etc., etc. Once we recognize the animal, the "bad" in ourselves, only then is there a chance for peace". Songwriter Charles Strouse (1928-2025) is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, studying under known composers Arthur Berger, David Diamond, Aaron Copland and Nadia Boulanger. His first Broadway hit was Bye, Bye Birdie, and was followed by several more successful plays, including All American (1962), Applause (1970), and Annie (1977). He has been nominated for several Tonys and Drama Desk Awards, winning a Tony in 1961, 1970, and 1977. His most popular plays still continue to be produced on Broadway today, with a revival of Annierunning on Broadway from 2012. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Fine condition.
