FREDERICK W. SEWARD
Clipped signature of the longtime Assistant Secretary of State, seriously injured protecting father William Seward on the night Lincoln was slain
Clipped Signature: "F. W. Seward", 3x1 affixed with adhesive tape to 5½x3 card, brief printed bio affixed below signature. Frederick William Seward (1830-1915), the son of Secretary of State and Republican Presidential aspirant William Seward, was Assistant Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson (1861-1869) and President Hayes (1877-1879). In this office he supervised the US consular service. Frederick Seward was seriously injured protecting his father from would-be assassin Lewis Powell, alias "Lewis Paine", on the night President Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. (He may have saved Lincoln's life four years earlier, warning of a plot to kill the President-elect in Baltimore before his arrival in Washington.) Seward, a lawyer by profession, edited and published his father's memoirs, and wrote his own, published the year after his death. Toned. Fine condition.
