GENE RODDENBERRY. Carbon Typed DS: "Gene Roddenberry" in ink, ¼p, 8½x11. No place, 1964 February 11. Headed: "Certificate of Authorship". Roddenberry, as an employee for hire for Arena Productions, certifies that he wrote the "59 page rewrite submitted 2-10-64" for production #7106, an episode entitled "A Touch of Crimson", for the TV series, The Lieutenant, which aired from September 1963 to September 1964. Roddenberry is credited as the creator and a writer of the show, a Marine Corps drama set at Camp Pendleton, just north of San Diego, California. Gary Lockwood starred in the title role as Lieutenant William Rice, and Robert Vaughn, Richard Anderson and Dennis Hopper also appeared on the series, which ran for 29 episodes. The episode mentioned in this document was one of 15 episodes aired in 1964. Gene Roddenberry (1921-1991), a decorated bomber pilot in WWII, became a film and TV writer in the 1950s, working on such shows as Dragnet and Have Gun, Will Travel. He is best known, however, as the creator of the original Star Trek series (1966-1969) and the dominant influence during his lifetime on the Trek films (from 1979) and successor TV series (from 1987). While Star Trek had its share of villains, Roddenberry always regarded ignorance, prejudice and war as the main enemies. His vision of the human future was humane and optimistic. Lightly creased, touching signature, with folds, not at signature. Slightly soiled. 2 file holes at upper blank margin, ¼-inch tears above each, staple and staple holes at upper left corner.
