WILLIAM T. MARTIN.
Future Confederate General signs the indictment of a poker player
Partly Printed Document signed: "Will. T. Martin/Dist. Atto/1st Judicial Dist Miss", 1p, 7½x10½. Amite County, Mississippi, 1848 November. For the Circuit Court of Amite County, Martin signs a Grand Jury indictment of merchant Jacob Halfrin, charging that the defendant did "play for money at a certain game at cards commonly called Poker against the peace and dignity of the State of Mississippi." Docketed on integral leaf, where a verdict of "guilty" is noted. William T. Martin (1823-1910) served with distinction as a Major General in the Confederate Army, holding commands under legendary cavalry generals "Jeb" Stuart and Joseph Wheeler. After the war, he was President of the Natchez, Jackson and Columbus Railroad. He was appointed postmaster of Natchez by President Theodore Roosevelt. Unevenly toned, with weakness at folds. 3-inch paper separation on one fold of integral leaf. Otherwise, fine condition.
