In full: "Dear Miss Grundy, Thank you for your letter and I am enclosing a signed photograph [not included] which I hope you will like. Thank you for all your good wishes - and the play is still doing quite nicely. With best wishes. Yours sincerely". Scofield was still a stage actor in 1949. This was the year he landed his first starring role, as Alexander the Great in Adventure Story, and was six years away from his first movie appearance in That Girl (1955). Paul Scofield (1922-2008) was an English stage, movie and TV actor who won renown as a Shakespearean actor and performed in more than 80 plays. He can be seen in film versions of several of Shakespeare's works, including King Lear (1971, 1987), Kenneth Branagh's Henry V (1989) and Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet (1990). He earned a Best Actor Academy Award for his role as Sir Thomas More in A Man For All Seasons (1966), a role which had previously earned him a Tony, and was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role as Mark Van Doren in Quiz Show (1994).
