Kennedy", "J. Edward Day", 23x19. Washington, D.C., 1961 March 21. Appointment of Richard James Murphy of Maryland as Assistant Postmaster General. As the youngest elected President, JOHN FITZGERALD (1917-1963) displayed a youthful vitality that inspired Americans to actively participate in politics. While showing his resolve in the Cuban Missile Crisis, he also made strides toward peace with trade liberalization agreements, promotion of civil rights, the nuclear test ban treaty, the Peace Corps, and the Alliance for Progress. In addition to Kennedy's political offices, which included those of U.S. Representative (1947-1953) and U.S. Senator (1953-1960) from Massachusetts, he also received recognition for his World War II heroism (the Navy and Marine Corps Medal) and the 1957 Pulitzer Prize for Profiles in Courage. Though Kennedy experienced failures, too, like the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion, the memory of "Camelot," the Kennedy White House, still shines brightly in American memory, and his assassination ranks with Pearl Harbor and the fall of the twin towers among the nation's darkest hours.

GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH (b. 1924) was Ronald Reagan's Vice President (1981-1989) before serving as 41st U.S. President (1989-1993), the first incumbent Vice President to be elected President since 1836. Even before becoming Vice President, he had built an impressive resumé: decorated service in WWII, Congressman (1967-1971), U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (1971-1972), Chairman of the Republican National Committee (1973-1974), first Chief of the U.S. Liaison Office in Beijing, China (1974-1975) and Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (1976-1977). BARBARA (PIERCE) BUSH married George H. W. Bush in 1945 and was an invaluable support to him as they raised five children (including two future Governors, one of whom became President).

Bill Clinton sends a typed letter of thanks. Typed Letter Signed: "Bill" as President, 1p, 6¾x8¾. The White House, Washington, 1997 February 20. To Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Washington, D.C. In full: "Thank you for writing to describe how the Medal of Freedom was revitalized during the Kennedy Administration - it's a fascinating story. I am proud to bestow this high honor on several exemplary citizens each year. It was altogether fitting to have you in attendance at Senator Dole's ceremony and I enjoyed our brief chat. I will keep in mind your thoughts about the original intent of announcing 'the list' once each year on July 4th." On January 17, 1997, a month earlier, President CLINTON presented BOB DOLE with the Presidential Medal of Freedom for Dole's service in World War II and Congress. Clinton had defeated Dole in the 1996 presidential election and would be inaugurated for his second term three days after the ceremony. Dole was clearly touched by the award, but nevertheless he began his remarks with: "I, Robert J. Dole, do solemnly swear…" as laughter erupted in the room. "Sorry, wrong speech," Dole said.

Signatures of the 38th-42nd U.S. Presidents. Republican GERALD R. FORD (1913-2006) served as the nation's 38th U.S. President from 1974-1977. Ford, who had assumed the Presidency upon the resignation of Richard M. Nixon, holds the distinction of being the only person not to be elected to either the Vice Presidency or the Presidency. Ford was denied election in his own right when he was defeated by Democrat JAMES EARL "JIMMY" CARTER (1924-2024), who was 39th U.S. President for one term (1977-1981). Republican RONALD REAGAN (1911-2004) served as 40th U.S. President from 1981-1989.

Handwritten letter to Lydia "Hup" MacArthur, the widow of Peter MacArthur, who gave Reagan his first job as a 21 year old Sports Announcer in Davenport, Iowa, signed "Dutch". Autograph Letter signed: "Dutch", 1 page, 6½x4¼. No place, 1991 April 2. To "Dear Hup" [Lydia MacArthur] on card printed with his name and Presidential seal. In full: "Thank you for sending the news story. Nancy & I both enjoyed it very much. Yes we would like to have been there but our travels and chores had us elsewhere. By the way if you are writing again sometime how about sending me Myrtles address? I've somehow lost it. Again thanks and out love to you." Ronald Reagan (1911-2004) had two careers: actor and politician. His first movie was Love is on the Air (1937) and his 53rd and last film was The Killers (1964). In 1965, he wrote his autobiography, Where's the Rest of Me?, a line from his role as Drake McHugh in King's Row (1942). Reagan left his job hosting television's Death Valley Days during the 1965-1966 season, when he entered politics. Elected Governor of California in 1966, he was reelected in 1970.

Striking 16x20 black and white photograph of William Howard Taft. Photograph Mount inscribed and signed: "For my faithful friend Millie Sullivan with best wishes./April 28, 1911---/Wm H Taft ", as President, in black ink. 16¼ x 20½ photograph mounted to a 22 ½ x 26½ white matte with a three-inch border. WILLIAM H. TAFT (1857-1930) was the only man to serve as both President (1909-1913) and Chief Justice (1921-1930). Hand-picked by Theodore Roosevelt to be his successor, Taft proved to be a better "trust buster" than his mentor. He empowered the Interstate Commerce Commission to end railroad abuses, started the process leading to a federal budget and sponsored a bill requiring candidates to reveal campaign expenses. Taft's conservative decisions led to a parting with the liberal Roosevelt and prevented him from securing a second term. Reaching the pinnacle of his career as the 10th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Taft supported the Judiciary Act of 1925, which gave the overburdened Court greater ability to determine the number and type of cases it would hear. Rutherford B. Hayes sends an autograph letter of regret that Mrs. Hayes will not be able to visit. Autograph Letter Signed: "R.B. Hayes" as President, 1p, 5x7¾. Executive Mansion, Washington, 1877 May 6. To Edward T. Steel. In full: "I received from Mr. Justice your note of the 4th and am exceedingly obliged for your kindness in this matter. Our stay will be so short and the presence with us here of a number of friends, will prevent Mrs. Hayes from being one of our party." Written just two months after Hayes took office. The election of Rutherford B. Hayes brought a new image to the White House. Rutherford and Lucy Hayes represented wholesomeness and decency. Mrs. Hayes was a popular hostess, but by the time of this letter both she and the President decided not to continue to have alcohol at White House functions. Interestingly, just one month before this letter, at the first state function at the White House, six wines were served at a dinner held in honor of the son of the Czar of Russia. Thereafter, no spirits were served and Mrs. Hayes became the champion of suffragists and was called "Lemonade Lucy". Light ink transference at blank areas. Fine condition.

As President, he mentions sending a miniature cameo bust of himself to a lady. Framed collection including: 1) Autograph Letter Signed in the Third Person. As President, 1 page, 6¼x4½. No place, 1796 March 16. Signed "the President" in text. To a Mrs. Stewart, in full: "Not for the representation or the value, but because it is the production of a fair lady, the President takes the liberty of presenting the enclosed, with his best regards, to Mrs. Stewart praying her acceptance." Toned and creased. Trimmed, irregularly cut edges. Fine condition.2) Framed reproduction of Madame de Brehan's miniature portrait of a Grecian style image of Washington. George Washington (1732-1799) a Virginia planter and surveyor who gained his military experience in the French and Indian War, was a delegate to the Continental Congress when he volunteered to take command of the American militia surrounding British-occupied Boston in 1775. Not a brilliant tactician, Washington turned the ragtag volunteer Continental Army, inadequately supplied by Congress, into an effective fighting force, preserving morale and winning enough battles to persuade France to enter the conflict.

Ford", "Betty Ford", "Jimmy Carter", "Rosalynn Carter", "Ronald Reagan", "Nancy Reagan", "George Bush", and "Barbara Bush". Color, 10x8. View of the south portico of the White House. President John Adams and First Lady Abigail Adams moved into the White House on November 1, 1800. It has served as the home of the President of the United States and his family ever since. Two light surface nicks at upper blank background, not touching signatures. Fine condition. Framed to an overall size of 51½x31¾.

Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant Signs 1865 Document for Galena Monument Association as National Hero. Printed DS: "U.S. Grant" as President of the Soldiers Monument Association, 1p, 14x17. Galena, Ill., 1865 August 28. Not filled in. In full: "This Certifies that [blank] Is hereby Constituted a Member of the Jo Daviess Soldiers' Monument Association." Vignette of Lincoln at top center and five other smaller vignettes. Engraved by the Continental Bank Note Co., New York. At the time the Civil War broke out, former soldier Ulysses S. Grant was working in his father's hardware store in Galena, Illinois. Four years later, Lieutenant General Grant was the hero of Galena and of the Civil War, which ended on April 9, 1865. The citizens of Galena purchased a furnished home in town and presented it to Grant. He signed its deed on August 18, 1865. Other honors were heaped upon the General, including the honorary presidency of the Jo Daviess Soldiers' Monument Association, for which he signed this membership certificate (according to his memoirs) on August 28, 1865. Galena is located on the Mississippi River in Jo Daviess County, named for the Daniel Boone-like figure of Col. JOSEPH H.

Rare Hoover signature on a 1951 autograph letter, expressing the hope that he will live long enough to see a Republican President. (He did.) Rare Autograph Letter Signed: "Herbert Hoover", 1p, 5½x3½. No place, no date, but 1951. On a card embossed in gray with a "W" at top center, the former President writes to "Rupert". In full: "Your 80 years, except the first five have been a useful life. You are about three years my senior and I am grateful for the proof that one may live that long. We may see a Republican President." In 1951 Hoover was 77. His hope was fulfilled since Dwight D. Eisenhower, the first Republican President since Hoover himself, was elected in 1952. Hoover died in 1964. Hoover is rare in ALS and this is a fine example with political content. Lightly tanned at right blank edge, paper clip impression at upper blank area, else in fine condition. Encapsulated.

Large 14½x18¼ signed sketch of the President who was elected to four terms. Sketch Signed: "Franklin D. Roosevelt" in pencil. Also signed by the artist and dated circa 1941. Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945) is one of the best-known Presidents in United States history. Before his tenure in the Oval Office, he served as Governor of New York. This position gave him valuable experience working with progressive-minded individuals to improve the economy. He served in the position for just over 12 years, dying 11 weeks into his fourth term. Roosevelt oversaw the U.S. during the Great Depression and World War II. His progressive platform introduced Social Security and the first national minimum wage. During his first term as Commander-in-Chief, he ended Prohibition. This decision is largely credited with helping him to a landslide 1936 election victory. Frame slightly chipped at corners.
