JUAN D. PERÓN (ARGENTINA)
The Argentinian President who harbored Nazi war criminals after WWII signed this sepia-toned 10½x14 photograph just a month before he was removed from office!
Inscribed Photograph signed: "To friend Horacio R. Rossetto, with great affection/ Juan Perón/ Buenos Aires, 24 August 1955" as President of Argentina, in Spanish. Sepia, 10½x14 overall, image 8¾x11½, (one surface). Juan Perón was President of Argentina from 1946 until September 21, 1955, exactly four weeks after he signed this photograph, when he was deposed by a military coup and went into exile in Madrid (1955-1973). Juan D. Perón (1895-1974) was part of a military junta, which seized power in 1943 and made him Secretary of Labor and Social Welfare. Promoted to Vice President and Minister of War in 1944 but purged by suspicious fellow officers in 1945, Perón was released after massive protests by the labor unions whose support he had cultivated. Perón was elected President in 1946, serving until overthrown in a military coup (1956). Peron ruled with authoritarian methods, but his program of nationalism and economic justice appealed to many of his countrymen. While Perón lived in exile in Spain, his Peronista movement remained a powerful force in Argentine politics. He once again served as President from 1973 until his death. His first wife, Maria Eva Duarte (1919-1952), affectionately called Evita, helped him as de facto Minister of Health and Labor, acquiring a mass following of her own. Infamously, Peron's government kept Nazi war criminals safe after WWII, protecting them from international leaders who wanted to try them for their horrific crimes. Creased, one touches "g" of month and "J" and final "n" of "Perón" of signature. Lightly silvered. 2, ½-inch separations at top edge, ¾-inch separation at upper right corner, ½-inch separation at lower edge (all intact). Tattered top edge.
