Autograph note signed: "W.T. Monnington" in blue ink. 1 page, 5x3, affixed to 5½x4 paper. Kent, England. June 17, 1972. In full: "Dear Mr. Croxford, I have much pleasure in answering your request for my signature, which is: Yours sincerely -". Walter Thomas Monnington (1902-1976) was an English painter, notable for his large murals, his work as a war artist, and for his Presidency of the Royal Academy. During WWII he joined the Directorate of camouflage at Leamington Spa, learning to fly and writing to the War Artists' Advisory Committee complaining about the lack of an aerial perspective, after which the WAAC commissioned a series which including Clouds and Spitfires (1943), Fighter Affiliation Halifax and Hurricane, and Tempest Attacking Flying-bombs. He was appointed President of the Royal Academy in 1966, and was knighted in 1967. Irregularly cut. Toned. Adhesive stains throughout. Soiled. Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
