ARTHUR TRACY

The famous singer apologizes for the late response after returning home from filming The Merv Griffin Show, signed in blue ink

Autograph Letter signed: "Arthur Tracy", in blue ink. 1 page, 5x8. No place, May 5, 1982. The Street Singer note paper, to "Dear Bill" in full: "Please excuse this delayed reply & I hope it will have been worth while waiting for. Reasons? I went from the Cookery right out of Hollywood for an engagement we did for the Merv Griffin Show and just returned home. Thank you very much for the cloth and the thought behind it. I shall cherish it. And been so happy you enjoy my type of music. I will be making some new records soon meantime want you to know they've just issued a new & beautiful album of my songs in England. It calls me quite frequently & we memorialize. Thanks for your good wishes & all the best to you. Cordially. Always in song." And postscript, "All my records you have are now very expensive collector's items if you can find 'em!".  Arthur Tracy (1899-1997, born Abba Avram Tracovutsky in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Russian Empire) was one of the biggest recording stars in both the U.S. and Great Britain in the 1930s and 1940s. Known as "The Street Singer", Tracy, who had once sung for pennies on the streets of Philadelphia, had one of his biggest hits with "Pennies From Heaven" (other hit tunes include "Roses of Picardy" and "It's A Sin to Tell a Lie"). The Street Singer was also the title of his radio show (1931) and a feature film (1937) in which he appeared. A star of vaudeville, Tracy also co-starred on radio with such greats as Groucho Marx, Jack Benny and Bing Crosby, and he headlined at the London Palladium. Tracy also appeared in several feature films, including Limelight (1936), Follow Your Star (1938) and Crossing Delancey (1988). Lightly creased. Adhesive residue at top edge. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
