DON BANKS
Signed letter of the engineer who helped develop the Patriot Missile. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "Don Banks" in blue ink, 1 page, 8½x11. Center Harbor, New Hampshire, August 1, 1992. To "Dear Mr. Stanhope" in full: "Thank you for your interest. I presume you read the article in the May 1991 issue of Reader's Digest. My idea was not directed toward the Patriot missile. It was conceived prior to and filed on January 1963 which was before Patriot was conceptualized. Recognition of its applicability occurred through discussion with others; notably Mr. Floyd Wimberly. At the time we did have evidence that the basic principle was valid. Now then answer me a question. How came you by my address? Sincerely" Don Banks (1922-2009) worked with the U.S. defense contractor Raytheon for 33 years. Beginning with the company in 1956, Banks served as one of Raytheon's chief engineers in developing the Patriot Missile. The MIM-104 Patriot is a surface-to-air missile (SAM) system used by the United States armies and allied nations. Floyd Wimberly was also a designer for the Patriot. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
