GENE FOWLER
A document from RKO Radio Pictures signed by the author and playwright, confirming the cancellation of a possible story idea titled "What a World"
Document signed: "Gene Fowler", in blue ink, 8½x11. February 27, 1940. Los Angeles, California. In part: "Dear Mr. Fowler: This will confirm our agreement as follows: It is hereby mutually agreed that the agreement of employment between us dated October 20, 1939 in connection with the story idea tentatively entitled "WHAT A WOLRD" is hereby cancelled and terminated effective as of the date hereof...". Gene Fowler (1890-1960) was an American journalist, author, and screenplay writer. Following a failed taxidermy career, Fowler began writing at the Denver Post, where was one of his first assignments was to interview the Western figure Buffalo Bill. He then began working for the New York Daily Mirror, where he soon after began penning his novels, including Trumpet in the Dust, A Solo in Toms-Toms, and The Great Magoo. It was also during this time that he began writing his screenplays, most famous being his Ali Baba Goes to Town (1937) and Some Like It Hot (1939), which bears no relation to the more popular Marilyn Monroe film. His son, Gene Fowler, Jr., became a well-known film editor. Corners slightly worn and creased. Light surface creases. Normal mailing folds. Staple hole in top margin. Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
