JERRY HERMAN
Typed letter from the Tony Award winning songwriter to friend Radie Harris, saying he will be unable to attend his birthday due to a real estate closing, but says his column was "the heartbeat of our business and I can't imagine Broadway without it"
Typed letter signed: "Jerry", in red ink, 6x9. October 18, 1988. In full: "Dear Radie, I have to leave for Key West on the 19th to attend a closing on a piece of real estate that I own there and feel badly about having to miss your Birthday celebration. Your column was the heartbeat of our business and I can't imagine Broadway without it". The Radie he's writing to is most likely Radie Harris (1904-2001), a Hollywood and Broadway columnist. Composer, songwriter and author JERRY HERMAN (1931-2019) is the winner of four Tony Awards - two in 1964 for Hello, Dolly! (for which he also won a Grammy Award in 1965), one in 1984 for La Cage aux Follies, and a special Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. He has also been nominated for five Tonys - including two nominations for Mame in 1966. Herman, who also performs and plays the piano in some of his productions, was the star of An Evening with Jerry Herman, which played on Broadway from July 28-August 23, 1998. Light surface creases. Mailing fold left of center. Corners slightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
