Color image, shown adjusting valves on one of his cryonics chambers
Photograph signed: "Robert Ettinger". Color, 9¾x7¾. Robert Ettinger (1918-2011) is recognized as the "father of cryonics." While recovering from wounds suffered in World War II, he conceived the idea that human bodies could be cryogenically frozen after death, awaiting medical advances which would permit their resuscitation. A college math and physics teacher, Ettinger hoped that a more prestigious scientist would take the lead in researching this idea; when none did, Ettinger took the lead himself, writing The Prospect of Immortality in 1962. He published Man Into Superman a decade later. Ettinger founded both the Cryogenics Institute and the Immortality Society. After he died on July 23, 2011, Ettinger became the Institute's 106th client, frozen along with his mother and both of his wives. Light surface scratches. Otherwise, fine condition.
