NOËL COWARD
He types a letter to Anita Loos, thanking her for the well wishes
Typed Letter signed: "Noël" in blue ink, 1p, 5¾x7¾. No place, 1964 April 19. To Anita [Loos]. In full: "Thank you so much for your sweet telegram on the 'High Spirits' First Night. It was so very nice to know you were thinking of me. My love, as always,". High Spirits, a musical adaptation of NÖEL COWARD's (1899-1973) play Blithe Spirit, premiered on Broadway on April 17, 1964. Hugh Martin and Timothy Gray, who had also "musicalized" Jean Webster's novel Daddy Long Legs as Love from Judy in London in 1952, wrote the music and lyrics for High Spirits. Coward directed High Spirits, receiving Tony nominations for directing and book writing. Blithe Spirit had enjoyed a long run in Britain and on Broadway after its debut in 1941. Anita Loos (1889-1981), a writer, producer and actress, began her career in the silent movie era. In 1925, she introduced Miss Lorelei Lee, the heroine of her novel, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (In addition to the novel, Loos wrote the screenplay for the 1928 film version.). Her last screenwriting assignment was a musical remake of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. Lightly creased. "C" in red ink (unknown hand) at upper right-hand corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
