JOSEPH LISTER. Black-bordered ALS: "Lister", 1p, 4½x7. Portland Place, London, 1897 February 22. To Miss Leary, Umtata, South Africa. In full: "Please accept my thanks for your kind letter of congratulation. I am glad you can report yourself as so much stronger." Handwritten beneath his signature: "My title is Lord Lister". ¼-inch separation at right blank margin at mid-horizontal fold. Slightly shaded. Fine condition. With original, black-bordered stamped envelope addressed by Lister. Lightly soiled and worn. Lister's greatest work was his introduction in 1860 of the use of antiseptic conditions during surgery, greatly reducing surgical mortality. This letter is in response to congratulations upon Lister being created a Baron. He was the first medical doctor ever to be conferred with this honor. Two items.
