Her career began after attending Somerville College in Oxford where she read history, inspiring her first history book A Century of Revolution (1922). She wrote a sequel titled The Fool of the Family in 1930, as well as other novels such as A Long Time Ago (1932), The Midas Touch (1932), The Feast (1950) and Lucy Carmichael (1951), and non-fiction books such as a biography of Jane Austen and a study of the art of fiction titled Outlaws on Parnassus.
