Photograph unsigned, Color 8x10. On April 12, 1981, the
Columbia, a re-usable orbital vehicle commonly known as the space
shuttle, made its first flight to Earth orbit (STS-1), commanded by veteran
astronaut John Young and piloted by Navy Capt. Robert L. "Bob" Crippen.
Aeronautical engineer and US Navy test pilot Robert Laurel Crippen (b.
1937) went into space three more times after this first flight (1983 and
twice in 1984), serving as Mission Commander on all these flights. He served
subsequently in important NASA posts, culminating in Director of the Kennedy
Space Center (1992-1995). There he supervised 22 successful shuttle missions.
After leaving government he worked in systems development for Lockheed Martin
and for Thiokol. Fine condition.
