CHARLES SANFORD SKILTON
Handwritten sentiment of the composer who drew on American Indian music for his inspiration. Extremely Rare!
Autograph Sentiment signed: "Sincerely yours/Charles Sanford Skilton/Lawrence, Kansas/Sept. 21 - 1936", 4½x3½. Composer and musicologist Charles Sanford Skilton (1868-1941) was perhaps the best known of a group of American composers called "the Indianists" for compositions inspired by Native American music. A professor of music at the University of Kansas from 1903, and Dean of the School of Fine Arts there, Skilton began frequent visits to the nearby Haskell Institute in 1915, after a student there offered to sing Indian music in exchange for lessons in harmony. Skilton's Indian-influenced music included Suite Primeval, and drew on traditions as diverse as the Sioux and Pueblo. His 3-act opera, Kalopin, utilized Chickasaw and Choctaw motifs around events of the New Madrid earthquake of 1812. Not much of this music survives in recorded form, but three versions of his War Dance, for solo piano, string quartet and full orchestra, respectively, do survive. Toned. Light adhesive residue (on verso). Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
