in blue ink. 3½x2¼ card. Elbert N. Carvel (1910-2005) was an American
businessman and politician from Delaware. He began his career managing the
Valliant Fertilizer Company in 1936, a position he would hold throughout his
political career. He was elected in his first attempt at office, becoming
Lieutenant Governor of Delaware in 1944 and serving one term. During the 1948
campaign he was elected Governor of the state, holding it for one term before
losing reelection. He furthermore lost election to the U.S. Senate. Carvel's
legacy remains his opposition to capital punishment, his support of civil rights
legislation, and his successful effort to create a Delaware Supreme Court.
