To “Dear Governor Muskie”. In full: “Thanks so much for your kind invitation to attend the annual meeting of the National Association of Tax Administrators in June./ I regret that previous commitments will prevent my attendance./ With best wishes, I am” Robert E. Smylie (1914-2004) was an American politician and attorney from Idaho. A member of the Idaho Republican Party, he served as the 24th Governor of Idaho for twelve years, from 1955 to 1967. In January 1947, Smylie became deputy attorney general in Idaho. He was elected governor in 1954 and successfully lobbied the 1955 legislature to propose an amendment to the state constitution to allow gubernatorial re-election, which was approved by voters in the 1956 general election. Smylie remains the only governor in Idaho history to win three consecutive four-year terms. He lost the Republican primary for governor in 1966, most likely because of his introduction of a sales tax. Stamped on verso, with light show-through to front, not affecting signature. Toned. Three folds: two vertical (one touching the “R” of “Robert”), and one horizontal. Otherwise, fine condition.
